Internships & Learnerships

We know the frustration of the South African job market: every entry-level job asks for three years of experience, but how do you get experience if nobody is willing to hire you? That is exactly why youth development programs exist.

These programs are the bridge between education and employment. They are designed specifically to give school leavers and fresh graduates practical, hands-on workplace skills while paying them a monthly stipend to cover transport and living costs.

Corporate Training, Government Intakes & Trades

The public and private sectors both invest heavily in youth programs:

  • Government & Agency Internships: Platforms like the NYDA and the DPSA frequently post 12-to-24-month internships. These are excellent for graduates needing public sector experience.
  • Corporate Learnerships: Massive companies (like Standard Bank, Absa, and Toyota) run SETA-approved learnerships where you work and study for a national qualification simultaneously.
  • Apprenticeships: For those who prefer working with their hands, mining and engineering firms offer apprenticeships to train the next generation of electricians, mechanics, and plumbers.

The Difference: Graduates vs. School Leavers

It is important to apply for the right program. Internships are generally aimed at people who already possess a University Degree or National Diploma but lack workplace experience. Learnerships and Apprenticeships, on the other hand, usually only require a Grade 12 (Matric) or N-courses, making them the perfect starting point for school leavers.
